New Lawn

A step by step guide to sowing a new lawn:

Remove perennial weeds, stones, and rubbish before sowing. Dig to a depth of 15-22 cm (6-9 in).

For a first rate lawn, top dress with a mixture of peat, sand and loam. Proportions are dependent on soil type.

Produce a firm level seed bed by raking and treading or rolling. The roller of a lawnmower may be used.

Before sowing, leave seed into manageable sections (i.e. square metres/yards).

Sow half the seed from the left to right, then half from top to bottom for each section.

For best results sow after the ground has been moistened.

After sowing, rake the seed into the soil. Lightly roll if possible.

If dry weather follows sowing, water regularly with fine spray keeping the seed bed constantly moist.

Sowing rates

35 g per sq metre (1 1/4 oz per sq. yard).
